For 45 years since its foundation in 1972, Kono Electronics, a specialized trading company, has supported the niche field of connectors. Connectors are indispensable for wiring connections in electronic circuits and optical communication. The global market for electronic parts is said to be worth about 66 trillion yen, and with increasing demand for sensors due to the progress of IoT and AI technologies in home appliances, mobile devices and various industrial machines, demand for connectors is also expected to grow steadily.

In the late 1990s, there was a notable shift of manufacturing production overseas from Japan. Kono Electronics, which at that time dealt mainly with major domestic companies, was also under pressure to change strategy. Our response was to put the emphasis on profits, and by providing a tailored response to our small and medium customers, we have developed our own path.

As a specialized wholesaler, we offer a varied product line-up with 12,000 different items constantly in stock in our warehouse. While keeping track of the manufacturers’ production status, we work to meet our clients’ needs for rapid delivery, and can offer same-day shipment for orders received by 4:00 p.m., with no minimum order.

On average, we receive 25,000 cartons per month, and process 2,800 order pickings a day, so it is not easy to receive and ship without error. Shipping errors are avoided by using bar codes to provide thorough traceability across the whole process. In the case of customer queries about defective products, our system enables us to promptly report which lot the defects came from.

Furthermore, utilizing our extensive product know-how, we are able to advise our clients on incorporating certain parts into their specifications from the development/design stage. We also have created a “showcase warehouse” including a display section where we can hold business discussions while demonstrating the actual products. In this way, we play an active role as the key intermediary connecting manufacturers and our customers.

Securing our Footing in an Expanding Market with Growth Strategy based on Global Coverage over Multiple Industries

After joining the Marubeni Group in December 2016, we plan now to expand our current customer network in Japan, the largest of any specialized wholesaler, to include overseas customers as well. Utilizing Marubeni’s know-how and reputation in domestic and international businesses, we will further enhance our strength, and in fact we are already starting to generate new business.

Kono Electronics has been focusing primarily on the domestic market, but now we are embarking on a new challenge to meet the procurement needs of our customers in China, with the support of Marubeni Shanghai. We are also considering new approaches in Thailand where there is strong demand for local procurement.

As for our merchandize, besides the connectors that are our speciality, we also plan to sell products such as sensors and wiring material for protecting power lines, as well as capacitors, in small lots available with same-day shipping. We have also begun talks with a manufacturer that specializes in data communication modules, Bluetooth, and wireless LAN. By adding to our product line-up we aim to improve our ability to respond to customer needs.

Electronics technology, including IoT, is progressing at an exponential rate, and everything is becoming digitalized. As demand for semiconductors increases, more manufacturing facilities will be needed. With the trend for labor-saving and personnel-saving operations, the market for connectors is expected to grow even more.

Recently, demand for infrastructure-related products such as outdoor security cameras has been picking up as the 2020 Olympics draw nearer. By making good use of the Marubeni Group’s management resources, we will look for opportunities for connector use in even more varied industries, and continue to strengthen our position.
